Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven

If you smell rotten eggs in the kitchen, don't touch a single switch, get everybody outside, and call your gas utility's emergency line from the yard. That's the answer, and it doesn't change whether the smell is faint or strong. But we know what it's like to stand there with the phone in your hand, trying to figure out who to call first. So here's what we tell folks on the porch. Slow down and work the list in order.

Do these things first, in this order

1. Don't flip any switches. Not lights, not the vent hood, not the garbage disposal. 2. Open windows and the back door if you can get to them without hunting around. 3. Turn the stove knobs to off, and check that a burner wasn't left barely cracked open. 4. Get people and pets outside or onto the porch. 5. From outside, or from a neighbor's, call your gas utility's emergency line. They come out for gas odor calls day or night. 6. Wait outside until somebody tells you the air is clear. That's the whole list. Nothing else matters until the utility clears the house.

What not to do, no matter how tempting

Don't light a match or a lighter to test anything, and don't strike the burner igniter again to see if it catches. Skip the phone calls from inside the room where you smell it, and don't plug or unplug anything. No candles. No cigarettes either. Don't go hunting the leak with soapy water on a gas line, and don't drag the range away from the wall to look behind it. Leave the flex connector and shutoff valve alone. That's utility and licensed gas work, not homeowner work. And don't talk yourself into "it's probably nothing" just because the smell faded.

When you should just leave

Leave right now if the smell is strong, if you hear a hiss near the range, if anybody feels dizzy or nauseated or has a headache, or if the odor is in more than one room. Leave if you smell it and can't tell where it's coming from. Walk out. Don't stop to gather things. Once you're outside, put some distance between you and the house before you call. If your gas meter sits outside and it's easy to reach, you can turn the valve off, but only if you know how and getting to it is safe. If not, let the utility handle it.

Utility first, then us

The gas company handles the supply side: the meter, the line coming into your home, and confirming whether gas is loose in the house. That call costs you nothing and it comes first, every time. After they clear the house, they may red-tag your range or tell you it needs service. That's where we come in. We work on the appliance itself, so we handle igniters that won't light, safety valves that stall, and thermostats and burner assemblies that don't shut off clean. Call us and tell us what the utility said. We'll bring those notes into the visit.

What we look at on the appliance side

A gas smell at the range often traces back to an igniter that sparks slow. Gas floods the burner for a few seconds before it catches, and you smell it. On ovens, a weak safety valve or a tired igniter does the same thing. Some smells aren't gas at all. A new range gives off a chemical odor while the insulation cures. Storm surges around here can scramble a control board and leave a burner acting strange, and spilled grease baking off smells plenty sharp too. We check ignition timing, burner flame color, and control response, then tell you plainly what we found. Reach us.

Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven — common questions

Is a faint gas smell for a second or two when lighting a burner normal?

A quick whiff as the burner catches can be normal. If it hangs around longer than a few seconds, or the igniter clicks a good while before lighting, the ignition is running slow. Worth a service call.

Should I shut off the gas myself?

Only at the outside meter, and only if you know the valve and can reach it safely. Otherwise leave it be. Get out, call the gas utility from outside, and let them shut it down properly.

My oven smells like gas but the burners are fine. Why?

The oven has its own igniter and safety valve. When that igniter heats slowly, gas releases before the flame starts. The delay is what you're smelling. We test the ignition circuit and valve response.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and tell us what you hear, smell, or see. Buzzing, leaking, no heat. Plain talk is fine. We'll ask a few questions and set a visit window.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

A technician shows up in the window, pulls the unit out, and tests it. No guessing games. We explain what failed and why, in words that make sense on your back porch.

  3. Step 3

    We fix it

Common parts ride with us, so a lot of repairs finish on that first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you plainly and set the return date before we pull out of your driveway.

Why homeowners call us

  • Storm-season surge damageLightning and blinking power hurt control boards. You get an oven that lights up but won't heat, or a washer that quits mid-cycle. We test boards and wiring before we replace anything, so you know what the surge actually took out.
  • Clay dust and lintRed clay dust and lint choke dryer vents and condenser coils. That's where long dry times and a hot laundry room come from, and it's why a fridge runs nonstop. We check airflow every visit, because a clogged vent kills a good machine slowly.
  • Straight talk, no runaroundWe tell you what's wrong and what it takes to fix. If a machine is worn past sense, we say that too, and you decide. No pressure and no jargon. We don't dress up an upsell as advice.
  • Independent and localWe're a Nashville crew, not a call center. As an independent shop we repair all major brands. Call us and you get a real person, somebody who knows the roads we drive.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
  • Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
